Iran’s Late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei To Be Buried
Iran has announced plans to bury its late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on July 9, following weeks of postponed funeral arrangements, according to Iranian state television.
The funeral rites are scheduled to begin on July 4 in Tehran before proceeding through key Iranian cities, including Qom and Mashhad, where the final burial will take place at the Imam Reza Shrine, one of the most revered sites in Shia Islam.
Authorities say the ceremonies are expected to attract large crowds, with estimates suggesting millions of mourners may participate across various locations. A national mourning period has also been declared in honour of the late leader.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who served as Iran’s Supreme Leader for 37 years after assuming office in 1989, reportedly died following a military strike earlier in the year. Iranian officials confirmed his death shortly after the incident, while funeral arrangements have experienced multiple delays.
The government has described the upcoming ceremonies as historic, with elaborate processions expected to reflect his long-standing influence on Iran’s political and religious leadership.
