Security Forces Uncover Arms Cache in Enugu

Troops of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), have uncovered an arms cache linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (ESN) within Enugu metropolis.

This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Enugu by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni.

He said the operation was conducted by troops of 82 Division Garrison under Sector 1, Operation UDO KA, in conjunction with DSS operatives in Enugu State Command.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Ayeni, the exercise formed part of ongoing Operation Eastern Sanity II aimed at consolidating peace and security efforts in the South-East. He said the operation was carried out on June 9 following credible intelligence from previously arrested suspects linked to IPOB/ESN.

He explained that security forces conducted a follow-up operation at Gariki in Enugu South Local Government Area, where they uncovered a concealed arms hideout hidden inside a structure disguised as a piggery. A significant cache of weapons and ammunition was recovered.

Recovered items include General Purpose Machine Guns, an RPG-7 launcher tube, AK-47 rifles, hand grenades, tear gas guns with cartridges, AK-47 magazines, 270 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and 478 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

Lieutenant Colonel Ayeni said all recovered weapons and arrested suspects have been handed over to the DSS Enugu State Command for further investigation and prosecution.

He noted that the operation demonstrates effective inter-agency collaboration and proactive efforts to counter threats to national security. He added that Operation UDO KA remains committed to sustained offensive action against criminal and terrorist networks in the region.

The Nigerian Army also urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible intelligence to security agencies to support ongoing security operations in the South-East.
