Akwa Ibom Activates COVID-19 Emergency Surveillance

The Akwa Ibom State Government has activated heightened COVID-19 surveillance measures following the confirmation of a fresh outbreak in neighbouring Cross River State.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Ekem Emmanuel, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Uyo, noting that Governor Umo Eno had directed immediate усилation of monitoring across all entry points, health facilities, and communities to prevent any possible spread into the state.

According to the commissioner, disease surveillance officers and rapid response teams have been placed on red alert to ensure prompt detection and management of suspected cases.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and strictly observe public health guidelines, including regular handwashing with soap and water or the use of alcohol-based sanitisers, wearing face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces, and avoiding close contact with individuals showing symptoms of illness.

Residents were also advised to refrain from handshakes and other physical greetings, and to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.

Dr Emmanuel further called on healthcare workers to maintain a high index of suspicion and adhere strictly to infection prevention and control protocols.

He added that the ministry would intensify collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and other relevant partners to ensure effective monitoring and a coordinated response.

Reassuring residents of the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health, the commissioner cautioned against the spread of unverified information that could trigger unnecessary panic, urging the public to rely only on official updates from the Ministry of Health.

He also announced the establishment of an enquiry desk at the ministry, alongside dedicated helplines for public assistance.

Meanwhile, authorities in Cross River State had earlier confirmed the outbreak on April 21, with the index case involving a Chinese national, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
