FG Approves 40% Peculiar Allowance for Civil Servants
The Federal Government has approved a forty per cent peculiar allowance for federal civil servants following sustained pressure from organised labour and threats of industrial action.
The agreement was reached at a high-level meeting presided over by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Esther Walson-Jack, in Abuja. The National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission has also issued the circular for immediate implementation of the allowance.
According to the report, the decision comes after nearly two years of agitation linked to the new minimum wage structure of seventy thousand naira. Labour leaders described the approval as a major breakthrough for workers’ welfare, with implementation scheduled to take effect from May 1, 2026, pending full rollout across federal institutions.
The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council said the move followed intense negotiations and a planned nationwide industrial action earlier scheduled for May 21, which has now been suspended.
The Head of Service urged continued dialogue between government and labour unions to sustain industrial harmony and prevent further disruptions in the public service.
