Ibezim: Church Has No Future Without Youths

The Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of the Niger and Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, has said the future of the church depends largely on how effectively young people are nurtured and guided.

Speaking at the 14th Synod of the Diocese of Awka, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), held at the Cathedral Church of Saint Faith, Awka, Archbishop Ibezim said the church could not thrive without the active involvement of youths.

The synod, themed “Repositioning the Church for the Future: A Focus on Youth Ministry,” focused on the role of young people in sustaining the church and society.

Ibezim said managing youths required deliberate moral and spiritual guidance, urging schools to strengthen moral education while calling on parents to take greater responsibility for the upbringing of their children.

According to him, spiritual formation begins at home.

The cleric also expressed concern over worsening economic conditions in the country, saying rising poverty levels continue to affect young people. He called for economic reforms driven by agricultural development.

Also speaking, the Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ezeofor, urged the church and society to create an environment where young people could freely express themselves and contribute meaningfully.

The Director of Awka Diocesan Youth Academy, Ven. Prof. Uchenna Umeifekwem, and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Engr. Nonso Ifesinachukwu, described the synod theme as timely and relevant, stressing that the church cannot function effectively without youths.

A synod delegate, Mr Anayo Nwanya, urged young people to adhere to the teachings of the church and avoid shortcuts in life.
