Soludo Calls for Moral Rebirth at Awka Diocese Knights’ Day

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has called for courage and moral responsibility among leaders and citizens, saying societal transformation requires commitment to what is right rather than what is convenient.

The governor spoke at the All Knights Day celebration of the Catholic Diocese of Awka held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Soludo commended the Catholic Church for promoting values centred on the common good and praised the Diocese of Awka for what he described as its firm stance against social decadence.

He highlighted the implementation of the Anambra State Burial Law, saying the policy was aimed at reducing excessive funeral spending and promoting dignified living and burial practices.

The governor also disclosed that the state government was intensifying efforts against individuals posing as religious leaders to exploit vulnerable people. According to him, some suspects had been arrested and were assisting ongoing investigations.

He said the state was pursuing a vision of a “New Anambra” founded on integrity, discipline and hard work.

In response to requests presented by members of the Knights, Soludo approved support for charity visits to orphanages but declined a request for government funding for ceremonial uniforms, insisting that public funds should not be used for private institutional regalia.

He urged the Knights to uphold values of humility, service and moral leadership within society.

The event featured a Pontifical Mass presided over by Paulinus Ezeokafor, while the homily was delivered by the Diocesan Secretary, Rev. Fr. Evaristus Iheanacho.

In his sermon, Iheanacho described knighthood as a call to discipline, reflection and service. He urged members to remain close to the people and avoid elitism, stressing that true Christian leadership should be guided by humility, courage and obedience to God’s commandments.
