NDC zones 2027 presidential ticket to South

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has zoned its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election to the southern region of the country, a decision widely viewed as strengthening the prospects of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi.

The announcement was made on Saturday during the party’s national convention in Abuja, where delegates also deliberated on constitutional amendments and internal restructuring ahead of the 2027 polls.

The party confirmed the zoning arrangement in a post on its official X account, stating: “NDC Presidential ticket is zoned to the South.”

The development comes amid increasing political realignments within the party, which has recently attracted high-profile defections from other political platforms.

According to the convention agenda, delegates also considered issues including the ratification of an amended party constitution and the election of new national officers.

The convention was attended by senior party figures, including Obi and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

In recent weeks, the NDC has recorded an influx of politicians from other parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Some lawmakers in the House of Representatives were also reported to have defected to the party during plenary sessions.

Obi, who was the Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023, and Kwankwaso, a former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), were formally received into the NDC following a closed-door meeting with party leaders earlier in the week.

Party leaders say the zoning decision is intended to promote inclusiveness and balance in the selection of its presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
