Obi Urges Stronger Support for MSMEs After UK Business Meetings

Former Anambra State Governor and presidential hopeful of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has called for stronger support for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), describing them as central to Nigeria’s economic growth and job creation.

Obi made the call yesterday after a series of meetings in London with British political and business stakeholders, including the Chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), Lord Jonathan Marland.

He said discussions with Lord Marland focused on expanding trade opportunities, improving economic cooperation, and strengthening frameworks to support small businesses across Nigeria.

Drawing comparisons with fast-growing economies such as China, Indonesia and Vietnam, Obi argued that sustainable development and employment generation depend heavily on deliberate policies that empower MSMEs, particularly in agriculture and manufacturing.
