Ohaa confirms tanker fire in Enugu, says no fatalities recorded

 

The Enugu State Fire Service has confirmed a fuel-laden tanker accident and subsequent explosion at the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway.

The state Chief Fire Officer and Director of the Enugu State Fire Service, Engr. Okwudili Ohaa, gave the confirmation on Wednesday in Enugu, stating that no lives were lost in the incident.

According to him, the accident occurred at about 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday when the tanker lost control and plunged into a valley along the expressway before bursting into flames. He described it as a lone accident involving only the tanker.

Engr. Ohaa said personnel of the State Fire Service were immediately deployed to the scene and succeeded in putting out the fire after some time, thereby preventing the spread of the inferno to nearby vegetation and the Iva Valley community. He added that normal traffic flow has since been restored along the axis of the expressway.

He further disclosed that the driver of the tanker and his motor boy, who sustained injuries, were rescued by officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
