Pressure Mounts on Keir Starmer as Fourth Minister Resigns

Political pressure is mounting on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer after a fourth Labour minister resigned from government and publicly called on him to step down as leader.

Among the latest resignations is safeguarding minister Jess Phillips, who criticised Starmer’s leadership in her resignation letter, saying that “deeds, not words matter.”

The development deepens divisions within the ruling Labour Party, with reports indicating that more than 80 Labour MPs have now urged Starmer either to resign immediately or announce a timetable for his departure.

However, support for the Prime Minister remains within sections of the party. More than 100 MPs are understood to have signed a statement backing Starmer and warning that “this is no time for a leadership contest.”

The crisis comes amid growing speculation over the future of Starmer’s leadership following internal disagreements and mounting dissatisfaction among some members of the parliamentary party.

Addressing a cabinet meeting earlier, Starmer insisted he would continue “getting on with governing” and maintained that no formal leadership contest had been triggered.

Several senior cabinet ministers later spoke publicly in support of the Prime Minister, with allies insisting he retained their “full support.”

Attention has also focused on Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who is widely viewed as a potential leadership contender. Streeting, however, declined to answer questions from journalists regarding the unfolding crisis.

Under Labour Party rules, a formal leadership challenge could be initiated if sufficient support emerges within the parliamentary party, although no official process has yet begun.

The latest resignations underline growing tensions within Labour at a time when the government is facing increasing scrutiny over its political direction and internal unity.
