Stop Obstructing Officers, Police Tell Residents

The Anambra State Police Command has cautioned residents against obstructing or harassing police officers while they carry out lawful duties, warning that such actions could endanger public safety and disrupt ongoing security operations across the state.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement issued on Sunday, said the Command is concerned about what it described as a growing trend where some individuals record police officers during operations while also engaging in insults, provocation, and other hostile behaviour.

According to him, while citizens have a constitutional right to record public officers in the discharge of their duties, such rights must be exercised responsibly and strictly within the confines of the law. 

He stressed that recording must not degenerate into intimidation, harassment, verbal abuse, physical confrontation, or any form of obstruction capable of interfering with lawful police operations.

The Command further warned that when officers are distracted or obstructed during active security operations, it may affect their ability to respond effectively, especially in sensitive or high-risk situations where quick action is required to protect lives and property.

It noted that in many parts of the world, citizens balance accountability with respect for law enforcement boundaries, adding that grievances should be addressed through appropriate legal and administrative channels rather than confrontation on the streets.

The police therefore urged residents, content creators, and social media users to remain law-abiding and cooperate fully with security agencies in the interest of public safety and order.

The Command also reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights, while continuing efforts to ensure the safety of lives and property across Anambra State.
