Man docked for allegedly stealing girlfriend’s iPhone

A 26-year-old man, Kevin Moses, has been arraigned before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing his girlfriend’s iPhone valued at ₦650,000.

The defendant, who resides in Sabon Tasha, Kaduna, is facing a charge of stealing.

The prosecution counsel, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that the offence occurred on May 31 in the Barnawa area of Kaduna State during a family dedication ceremony held at the defendant’s uncle’s residence.

He alleged that the defendant, who is the boyfriend of the complainant, Miss Sharon James, stole her iPhone during the event.

“The defendant, who is a boyfriend to the complainant, Sharon James, stole her iPhone worth ₦650,000 during a dedication ceremony at his uncle’s house in Barnawa,” the prosecutor said.

He further told the court that the device was later traced to a buyer, who reportedly informed police that the phone had been sold to him by the defendant.

“The phone was tracked to the buyer, who told the police that the defendant sold it to him,” he added.

According to the prosecution, the offence contravenes Section 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017, which prescribes a penalty of up to five years imprisonment upon conviction.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In his ruling, Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The magistrate ordered that the sureties must provide evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna State Government and reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

The case was adjourned until July 22, 2026, for hearing.
