The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has inaugurated the 8th Governing Council of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Awka, with a charge to drive institutional reforms and strengthen academic excellence in the institution. The ceremony was held at the Light House, Awka.
Governor Soludo urged the new council members to approach their assignment with integrity and commitment, stressing that their tenure comes at a critical period in the university’s development.
He said the focus must be on delivering lasting reforms that will benefit future generations.
According to him, the university requires urgent repositioning, noting concerns over previous administrative lapses and irregularities in recruitment processes.
He expressed confidence that the new leadership would correct the identified challenges and restore credibility.
The Governor specifically commended the appointment of the new leadership team, led by Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Peter A. Onwualu, describing them as capable of repositioning the institution for global competitiveness.
In his remarks, Prof. Peter A. Onwualu, who spoke on behalf of the newly inaugurated council, pledged the readiness of members to transform COOU into a top-ranking state university in Nigeria.
He noted that the council would prioritize institutional strengthening and academic quality.
He acknowledged existing challenges in Nigeria’s university system but expressed confidence that COOU could serve as a model for reform. He also appealed for continued government support to achieve the set objectives.
Prof. Onwualu assured that the council would work collectively to ensure measurable progress in governance, infrastructure, and academic standards within the university.
The newly inaugurated council is chaired by Prof. Peter A. Onwualu as Pro-Chancellor and includes distinguished members such as Igwe Dr. Chris Oranu Chidume, Prof. O. J. Ogbuagu, Chief Christopher Ndubuisi, and retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG Chris Ezike.
Other members include the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha; Deputy Vice-Chancellors Prof. A. C. Nweke (Administration & Environmental Sustainability), Prof. Obiora Ejiofor (Academics), and Prof. Sylvia Okonkwo (Development & Uli Campus Affairs).
Additional members are Prof. Matthias O. Ananti, Prof. Ogonna Ifebi, Prof. Nkeiruka Orji, Prof. MaryJude Igbodika, and Dr. Chukwunonso Ekesiobi.
