Tinubu Reaffirms Unity, Security, Economic Reforms On Democracy Day
President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to national unity, democratic consolidation, improved security, and economic recovery as Nigeria marks 27 years of uninterrupted civilian governance since 1999.
In his nationwide Democracy Day address, President Tinubu described Nigeria’s democratic journey as one built on resilience, sacrifice, and the collective determination of citizens to sustain constitutional rule.
He said the country has continued to strengthen its institutions through elections, legislative processes, and judicial interventions, despite prevailing challenges.
The President called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, political parties, and civil society organisations to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections across the country.
He stressed that credible elections remain central to public trust in democracy, urging all stakeholders to act with responsibility and restraint.
On security, President Tinubu said his administration has scaled up counter-insurgency and internal security operations, including the recruitment of over 50,000 police officers and enhanced military deployments nationwide.
He warned that criminal elements threatening national peace would face decisive action, insisting that “there will be no safe haven for bandits, kidnappers, and terror sponsors.”
He added that security forces have recorded significant operational gains against insurgents while continuing rehabilitation programmes for repentant fighters under government-led surrender frameworks. According to him, “Nigeria will remain firm in defending its sovereignty and protecting its citizens.”
On the economy, the President said ongoing reforms are aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability, boosting investor confidence, and expanding fiscal capacity for development.
He noted improvements in non-oil revenue, domestic refining capacity, and transparency in public finance management, while acknowledging that many citizens are still facing economic pressures.
President Tinubu also highlighted key reforms in the power sector, including the implementation of the Electricity Act, which grants states greater authority to generate and distribute electricity.
He said efforts are underway to reduce the national metering gap, settle verified legacy debts, and expand rural electrification through renewable and off-grid solutions to improve access to electricity.
In agriculture and infrastructure, he outlined federal initiatives aimed at boosting food production, including mechanised farming programmes and tractor deployment schemes. He also referenced support for small and medium enterprises to strengthen exports and create employment opportunities across key sectors of the economy.
Paying tribute to Nigeria’s pro-democracy heroes, President Tinubu honoured those who fought for the June 12 struggle, including the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and other activists, describing their sacrifices as the foundation of Nigeria’s current democratic system. He said their courage ensured that “the will of the people could no longer be silenced.”
The President concluded by calling for unity and collective responsibility, stressing that Nigeria’s diversity remains a major strength when properly harnessed. “We must move forward together, rejecting division and embracing shared progress,” he said.
