Peter Obi Hails Nurses, Midwives on World Nurses Day

Former Anambra State Governor and presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has paid tribute to Nigerian nurses and midwives on the occasion of World Nurses Day, describing them as “the heart of our health sector” and commending their contribution to healthcare delivery across the country.

In a statement marking the annual celebration, Obi acknowledged the vital role nurses and midwives play in national development, noting that they continue to serve under difficult and demanding conditions.

He said the profession remains indispensable to Nigeria’s healthcare system and stressed the need for greater investment in healthcare education and training.

Obi also disclosed that he had, over the years, supported schools and colleges of nursing and midwifery in different parts of the country in recognition of the importance of the profession to healthcare delivery and human development.

The former governor praised Nigerian nurses for what he described as their compassion, courage and resilience despite challenges such as poor working conditions, inadequate medical equipment, high patient-to-nurse ratios and the physical and emotional demands of the job.

He further highlighted the achievements of Nigerian nurses abroad, saying many had distinguished themselves globally in research, clinical practice and healthcare innovation while positively representing Nigeria on the international stage.

According to him, a future government under his leadership would prioritise investment in healthcare education and improved welfare for nurses to ensure they remain globally competitive and adequately rewarded.

Obi reiterated his vision of building a country where the sacrifices and dedication of healthcare professionals would receive greater recognition and support.
