Anambra warns: no extension as Soludo moves to wipe out illegal structures in Nnewi
The Anambra State Government says there will be no extension of the deadline for compliance with statutory notices issued to owners of shanties and illegal structures within the Nnewi metropolis under its ongoing urban renewal drive tagged “Operation Zero Shanties.”
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barr. Chijioke Ojukwu, gave the warning while leading officials of the ministry on enforcement and issuance of notices across parts of Nnewi, including Umudim, Uruagu, Agbo-Edo Market, and Eme Court Layout. He said the exercise is part of preparations for planned government projects in the area.
Barr. Ojukwu explained that the ongoing clearance forms part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s broader urban regeneration agenda aimed at restoring order and ensuring proper physical planning across the state. He stressed that affected property owners must comply within the stipulated timeframe or face enforcement actions.
According to him, the state government has also introduced “Operation Show Your Building Plan,” which targets commercial buildings, plazas, and market structures to ensure strict adherence to approved development guidelines and physical planning regulations.
The Commissioner noted that the exercise is not restricted to Nnewi alone, but a statewide operation designed to enforce compliance with urban development laws. He acknowledged that while the process may cause temporary inconvenience, it is necessary for sustainable development.
He advised owners of marked buildings to present their approved building plans to the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development for verification within two weeks, warning that failure to comply would attract sanctions, including demolition.
Barr. Ojukwu reiterated that the government remains committed to ensuring orderly development, insisting that the “Operation Zero Shanties” initiative will not be compromised or delayed beyond the approved timeline.
He further urged residents to cooperate with government officials, emphasizing that the exercise is in the public interest and aimed at improving infrastructure planning, safety, and environmental order in urban centres across Anambra State.
